Setting And Debut Of Zits Comics :

Set in the suburbia of central Ohio, the comic strips came into being in 1996 when a great cartoonist Jerry Scott wanted to expand the boundaries of the comic industry by creating unique teenager-themed related comic strips. At that time, he was working on one of the famous comic strips named Baby Blues.

About the Creator of Zits Comics  :

The mastermind behind Zits is the twosome cartoonists, Jerry Scott and Jim Borgman who teamed up to create comic strips distinct from other typical teenager-themed comics.  

Jerry Scott first came up with the idea of these comics when he was busy creating his fabulous comic strip Baby Blues and then along with drawing baby blues sketches, he started drawing teenager sketches. However, he was unsatisfied with these sketches as they bore too much resemblance with his existing comic strips. After this, he discussed the matter with his cartoonist friend Jim Borgman and started crafting the Duncan characters that we see today.

Both Jerry Scott and Jim Borgan have won the Max and Moritz model for producing the best international comic. They have also been awarded the NCS award two times for the best newspaper comic strips.


Characters Of Zits Comics :

  • Core Character Of Jeremy Michael Duncan :

The comic strips are based on various characters with Jeremy Michael Duncan, a main protagonist around whom the entire comic strips revolve. When the comic strips debuted in 1997, he was depicted as a 15-year-old young boy who grows as comic strips evolve.

Michael had a great passion for music and dreamed of becoming a great rock musician. Seeing his aspiration, he was called Jeremy Clyde after the Jeremy and Chad rock duo of the 1960s. He is a tall boy who mostly wears a purple shirt over a black t-shirt and blue jeans and spends most of his time with his friends or impressing his girlfriend Sarah Toomey. 

In the comic strips, he is often portrayed as an ashamed and humiliated teenager who frequently receives lectures from his parents, Walt and Connie Duncan. His relationships with his parents, friends, and love interest add significant charm and humor to the comic strips and make Zits one of the most enduring comic strips of all time. 

Other Main Characters Of Zits Comics :

Other main characters include Walter Duncan, Connie Duncan, Sara Toomey, and Hector Garcia.
  • Walter Duncan :
Walter Duncan is Jeremy’s father, a fat and bald man who finds it difficult to talk to his son.  Although,  he is an orthodontist by profession but has no knowledge of technology and often thinks of fan belts as part of a search engine and thinks that “Googling” someone means having sex with them. He is an old-fashioned man who has minimal interest in technology and is unable to understand the basic workings of equipment despite Jeremy explaining it to him several times.
  • Connie Duncan :
Connie Duncan is Jamie’s mother and a child psychologist who worked part-time after the birth of Jeremy. She is an aspiring writer who starts writing a book but only manages to finish the first chapter due to Jeremy’s interruptions and noises. Like Walt, she finds it difficult to communicate with Jeremy but, compared to Walt, she is more willing to listen to him.
  • Hector García :

Hector García is Jeremy’s best friend and the singer in his band who comes from a Spanish-speaking family and loves Autumn, a vegetarian girl. Hector and Jeremy share an inseparable and unbreakable bond and spend most of their time together, dreaming of restoring a Volkswagen van and going on road trips. During the story arc in 2011, Hector’s character undergoes a complete transformation and takes on a new character design
  • Sarah Tomany :

Sarah Tomany is another main character who plays the role of Jeremy’s on-again/off-again girlfriend. In the story arc, she is shown to have a gentle, generous, and kind nature when she cuts her hair and donates her ponytail to help children undergoing chemotherapy.
  • Pierrece :

Pierrece is one of Jeremy’s close friends who is known for having strange piercings all over his body. Despite his rebellious appearance, he is a very humble man who is always willing to help others. He plays the drummer in Jeremy’s band and also works as an animal activist and environmentalist.
  • Supporting Characters :

Other characters include a brown cat called Clapton, Jeremy’s classmate named Phoebe who is a massive caffeine eater, an African American student at Jeremy High School called D’ijon who is also Pirece’s love interest, Hector’s ex-girlfriend called Autumn who is a strict vegetarian and calls Jeremy as a vampire and flesh eater and other classmates of Jeremy called Brittany, Tim Olsen, Posse, and Richandamy.

Zits were first featured in 1997 in over 200 newspapers and soon became one of the most popular comic strips, that have achieved many awards and are also being translated into 15 languages. Since their creation today, they are continuously publishing in various newspapers across the globe with their popularity increasing day by day. Till 2010, 1700 different newspapers published these comic strips across the globe in 45 different countries.

Compilation Of Zits Comics In Books :

The comic strip not only delights its readers with its humor and innocence but also sheds light on many complex issues. In addition to their syndication in various newspapers, the comic strips are also compiled into various books including ”zits Sketchbooks” and ”zits Treasurey”  and are also published in various illustration novels including ”zits: chillax” so that they are easily accessible to fans across the globe.
