About Cul de Sac:

The strip is basically a humorous portrayal of Alice’s encounter with different things and experiences as she grows and starts discovering the joys and wonders of life for the first time.

About Creator ” Richard Thompson ”:

Cul de Sac is written and drawn by an American cartoonist, Richard Thompson who by creating such a resonating comic strip takes readers on the whimsical journey of exploring the joy and wonders of life for the first time through the life of a four-year-old girl, Alice and reminds people of the joy and excitement that comes with exploring the world from scratch.

Apart from being a notable cartoonist, he is also a talented illustrator widely recognized for his illustrated poem called ” make the Pie Higher”. He is known for his gentle humor, clever wordplay, and playful use of language that takes the comic strip to another level.  

Richard’s Early Life:

He was born in Maryland and from his childhood, he developed an affinity for arts and storytelling and decided to become a cartoonist which led him to pursue his career as a professional cartoonist. He attended various art schools and universities to master the art of comic writing and drawing, which led him to become a popular cartoonist who has been capturing the hearts of readers for over three decades.

Richards’ journey to a notable cartoonist :

He started his career as a professional cartoonist in the 80s when he started offering his services as an illustrator to publications such as the Washington Post and the New Yorkeris unique style and gentle humor soon garnered tremendous attention and earned a special place in the hearts of readers. On 14 February 2004, he introduced his readers to the cul de sac comic strip that made its debut as a limited comic strip in the Washington Post but after just three years of its inception, it became a daily comic strip that started publishing daily by the Universal Press syndicate.

Richard’s Death And End Of Cul de Sac :

Richard continued producing comic strips till 2012 when he decided to end the comic strip because of his serious illness from Parkinson’s disease which led to his death in 2016.  Although he died, his legacy lives in our hearts ever in the form of his comics that have become a beloved staple in the comics world. 

Adaptation into other media :

After his death, his work was compiled into various books, collections, and documentaries and published in tribute to him. 4 book collections of these comic strips were released, of which the first three collections were published in three consecutive years in 2008, 2009, 2010, while the fourth book was published in 2012.

The first book collection was titled ” Cul de Sac: This Exit”, the second was titled ” At Child’s Play: Cul de Sac ” Collection, the third was titled ”Shapes and Colors: A Cul de Sac” Collection while the fourth was published as ” The Mighty Alice ”. After the end of the strip’s publication, all of the strips from their first day to their end were published in a two-volume book ” The Complete Cul de Sac ” which was released in 2014. 

Various animated shorts of a half minute or one minute have also been made on comic strips.
Awards And Accolades :

He earned tremendous success and widespread acclaim throughout his profession. Various other renowned and brilliant cartoonists admired and praised his work including Bill Waterson, the creator of Calvin and Hobbes comic strip, and Stephen Pastis, the creator of Pearls Before Swine comic strip. 

He also won various awards such as the Eisner Award, Harvey Award, Golden Brick Award, Gold, Silver Funny Bone Award, etc. He was also awarded the Reuben Award which is considered the Oscar and highest level award in cartooning by the National Cartoonist Society.
