Beetle Bailey Comics’ Setting And Debut   :

Set in a fictional United States Army post, Beetle Bailey made its inception on 4th September 1950 and has delighted its readers over seven decades.

Writer And Illustrator  ” Mort Walker ” Prelims :

Comic strips were devised by the brilliant Mort Walker who created the comic strip in 1950. Various other artists including Frank Johnson, Bob Gustafson, Jerry Dumas, and his sons, helped Walker in the creation of Beetle Bailey comic strips. 

He is a talented cartoonist, writer, and artist who has a writing talent, and comic drawing and is very fond of fine arts even when he was a child. He started drawing cartoons from childhood and made his first sold cartoons at the age of twelve, after which he regularly sold cartoons to various magazines. He also published his first comic strip when he was only eleven years old.

Walker ‘s Biggest Achievements :

His famous comic strips include Beetle Bailey and Hi and Lois which he created in 1954 four years after the inception of Teetle Bailey. He also works in other areas of life and performed his services as a stage actor, cheerleader, newspaper staff illustrator, editor, and designer, he also served in the United States Army as an investigating and intelligence officer.

From 1950- to 1952 during the early period of comic strip publication, he wrote, penciled, colored, and wrote comic strips but after that, he started hiring different cartoonists that assisted him with his work.

Subjects Of Beetle Bailey Comics :

The early comic strips chronicle the adventures of a carefree student, Beetle studying at a rockview university, navigating the challenges of academia, relationships, and the pursuit of happiness. But later the theme of the comic strip changed to Battle’s army life, capturing his adventure at a military outpost with his seniors, peers and colleagues.

  • Core Character Of Beetle :

In the comic strips, Beetle is depicted as a lazy student who enlists in the United States Army after dropping out of school and decides to stay in the military forever. One of the reasons he joined the army is because he has two girlfriends he was sandwiched between and wanted to get rid of. His first girlfriend Buzz was angry with him while the second loved him and pursued him constantly. He thought joining the army would help him get away from girls.

His carefree attitude and mischievous nature add to the humor of the comic, making him a resonant character in comic strips that resonates with readers of all ages who have fond memories of their university days as in the comic strips, he is depicted as a mischievous and carefree boy who plays pranks on his classmates, chases girls, shirks his responsibilities and gets along with his friends and fellow students including Hapless Zero, the flirtatious Miss Buckley and the passionate Plate and often finds himself in hilarious and relatable situations. 

Beetle’s attitude did not change even after joining the army. He remained a mischievous boy who retained his backward attitude and penchant for mischief. He continues to show his laziness and is often punished by his seniors for taking naps, avoiding tasks, and neglecting his responsibilities. His frequent misadventures at the base, lighthearted escapades, and hilarious interactions with his colleagues in a hilarious manner have entertained readers worldwide.

Other characters at the start of comic strips include Bitter Bill, Diamond Jim, Sweatsock, and Freshman who are introduced as the friends of beetle. Mart Walker drew inspiration for the development of these characters from his fellow brothers, Kappa Sigma at the University of Missouri, he laid the basis of these characters on his brothers.

It is one of the widely published comic strips, appearing in 1800 different newspapers across the globe.Also special magazines were launched for Beetle Bailey comic strips, across different countries. One dedicated magazine was launched in 1974 in Sweden and another in 1973 in Denmark, Europe.

Beetle Bailey does not confine itself only to the newspapers.
