First Appearance Of Lio Comics :

The comic strip was first published on May 15, 2006, in more than 100 newspapers and has since been distributed by various syndications,  including Andrews mcmeeel syndication, Universal Press Syndicate, and Universal Unclick. The strips were an instant success that grew in popularity over time, and within a year of their launch in 2006, they were published in 330 different newspapers around the world.

Originator ” Mark Tatulli ” Intro :

Lio was created by a well-known American cartoonist Mark Tatulli who expanded the borders of traditional comic strips by introducing surreal and visually stunning comics that convey compelling and provoking stories through beautiful pantomime illustrations. 

He is also a great writer and animator known for his offbeat humor, clear visual gags, and imaginative storytelling. He had a great passion for drawing since his childhood and started drawing cartoons when he was in elementary school. He continued his passion and improved day by day until he became a prolific and skilled cartoonist.


He believes that “a picture is worth a thousand words” and has established himself as one of the most imaginative and one-of-a-kind cartoonists of all time, creating wordless yet expressive and compelling comic strips.  Apart from drawing, he has also written many graphic novel series and animated television series which earned him great success and fame in these life works.

In an interview Mark Tattoli was asked what makes comic strips resonate so much with people? He replied that I do not know the reason. I made comic strips just to entertain myself and pictured my childhood in these comic strips. But readers love different things about Leo that explore the fun yet bizarre realm of imagination of a young child who still believes in magic and monsters that we all have.

Awards and Accolades  :

Mark Tatulli was awarded the Newspaper Comic Strip Award by the National Cartoonists Society in 2008 for his unique and unrivaled comic strips. Clink editor, the editor of Lio’s comic strips says that Leo is much more than a complex and luxurious comic strip that is full of humor, wonders, and fears. He said that it is enjoyable to observe each day that is a fully comprehended and self-contained moment in itself and because of Mark’s skills to capture that moment so perfectly,  you can lose yourself and enter into the bizarre and funny world of life and take it all in. 

He further added often I feel like I am entering into the universe of Lio and watching everything from that point of view and this is the way Mark lets us embrace our own quirkiness.


Characters and Setting Of Lio Comics :

Tattoli created the weird character of Lio, The main protagonist of the comic strip, by inspiring from the horror movies he watched in his childhood and set the comic strips in a creepy world occupied by strange creatures, monsters, aliens, robots, and other creepy creatures.  

Lio is not alone in his adventures. In the comic strips, he is always seen with the following characters including a spider named Fido who helps him solve the papers, a sweet and adorable white-colored cat called Cybil, a cobra named Frank who sleeps with Lio in his bed, a giant squid called Ishmael, and a lobster called mittens that lio saved from his father planned dinner.

Other characters frequently seen in the comic strips include school bullies, monsters, aliens, lab creatures, Leo’s unknown father, Leo’s grandmother, Leo’s wide-eyed cousin named Bubbles, Leo’s love interest Eva Rose who often ignores or abuses him, etc.

Adaptation Of Lio Comics Into Other Media :
 
These comic strips are also regarded as the best comic strips by the National Cartoonist Society.
