B.C is an award-winning comic strip that chronicles the adventures of a group of people living in caves and animals living in the geologic time. It is one of the longest-running American comic strips, having first debuted in 1958. At first, many syndications refused to publish the comic strips, but eventually, the Herald Tribune Syndicate of New York accepted the strip and launched the first strip on February 17, and since its inception, it has the tickling the bones of its readers.


Artist Introduction

This daily American comic strip is crafted by a notable American cartoonist Mastroianni and Mick Mastro. He created these comic strips by drawing inspiration from his interest in anthropology and his love of humor. He named the comic strip B.C. at the suggestion of her wife, Bobby. 

He has a great passion for studying human biology, human behaviors, cultures, and society. In comic strips, he attributes human traits to animals and brings joy and laughter to people’s lives by putting them in relatable situations that make humans laugh heartily.

He skillfully shows animals, especially dinosaurs, thinking, acting, going about their daily lives, solving problems and mysteries like humans, and entertaining people with their humorous adventures and antics. He provides a light-hearted way to reflect on our lives and the world by creating comics that poke fun at society, politics, and everyday struggles by putting animals in human-like situations.

He created simple yet expressive drawings that never fail to delight his readers. He is a talented artist and a writer despite being a cartoonist. He has captured millions of hearts and achieved great success during his career. Despite B.C comic strips, he also created The Wizard of ID comic strip which is another success of his. His comic strips earned him a special place in the comic industry and has been honored with bundles of awards for his invaluable work.

He produced thousands of B.C. comic strips until he died in 2007 due to a sudden stroke, after which his daughter Perry and his two grandsons, Mason Mastroianni and Mike Mastroianni, took over the responsibility of continuing to create both of his comic strips. Mason served as chief writer and cartoonist, Mick also wrote the comics, while Perry created the text for the comics and colored the comics.

B.C comic strip setting and subjects:

Set in a prehistoric era, the comic strips also reflect Johnny’s religious and political beliefs and make some references to Christianity as Johnny was an ardent follower of Christianity for whom the Bible was the main focus. In the religiously themed comic strips, being a devout follower of Christianity, he incorporates his own Christian beliefs into them which later became a point of contention. Johnny himself considers his strips a “ministry” that combines secular humor with religious themes.

B.C. comic strips have been adapted into various media including video games, computers, and animated television specials such as B.C.: The First Thanksgiving and B.C.: A Christmas Special featuring popular characters such as Peter, B.C., Willy, Thor, Bob, etc.
